What is the importance of Upanayanam in Hindu religion? It is said that only those people who gone through Upanayanam, should chant Gayatri. Why is it like that?

In the Hindu custom, Upanayanam is a rebirth to a man, when he is invested into spiritual life. If you are invested ceremonially, it has its sanctity. However, you are free to chant Gayatri. Learn it from one who knows it.

  1. revered Swamiji,

My son-in-law has undergone upanayanam. But says he does not find time to do sandhyavandana. many days he goes to office in the evening and returns home early morning and goes to sleep.
I have learnt that Japa ( any mantra ) can be done any time , any where and while in any state. Am I right ? How to tell him the importance of doing japa even in the materialistic life ? Or shall I simply ignore his act ?
( He is not spiritually oriented. It seems his father also does not do either sandhyavandana or Gayatri japa. How to inspire my son-in-law to start doing Gayatri Japa ? )

    Pranams again,
    Shashidhar

  2. Dear Shashidhar,

I am not surprised to read your comments. Most of the younger generation do not pay attention to any spiritual practice. The reason is that they have not been taught those things from their younger days nor their parents themselves do it regularly.

It may take a long time for you to convince them, even then go on talking about it in a mild way so that they will realize it one day or the other and also pray for them as much as possible.

    Yours in the Lord,
    Swami Raghaveshananda

  3. Thank you, Revered Swamiji for kind reply ?
Then I need to know one thing. Usually sandhyavandana involves several steps which includes Gayatri japa.

1.Can one do atleast, Gayatri japa alone leaving other parts of sandhyavandana, if one complains that he does not find time ?

    2. Can I ask him to do japa at any available time atleast ?

Can I expect an answer for this one question, swamiji ?

    Pranams

  5. I daily read 3 verses of Bhagcatgita and pray when I wake up and go to bed. But my mind turns towards wordly things after the prayers. So what can be done to have pure thoughts in mind.

  6. My dear Jaydeep
Your problem is not an isolated one. One cannot expect to have pure thoughts for a long time by spending only a few minutes.
    I suggest you the following:
    1. Keep repeating the name of the Lord as much as possible throughout the day.
    2. Read spiritual literature, especially life stories of saints.
    3. Try and get company of like minded persons.
If I can have your address, I will guide you to a nearby Ramakrishna Mission Center where you can talk to Swamiji.
    Thanking you
Yours in service of the Lord
    Swami Raghaveshananda
