Swami Vivekananda visited Belgaum in October 1892 and stayed at two places - for 3 days from Oct 15-18 as a guest of Sri Bhate and for 9 days from Oct 19-27 with Sri Sri Haripada Mitra stationed in the Fort area. Both places are centres of the Ramakrishna Mission; the latest being the place of Sri Bhate that has become the sub-centre of the Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Fort. The shrine room in the sub-centre has the cot, stick and mirror used by Swamiji. Daily worship and puja is offered to Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother Sri Sharada Devi and Swami Vivekananda.
On Oct 21, 2007, the auspicious Vijayadashami day, a simple ceremony was performed to install a new photo of Swami Vivekananda. A large photograph of Swamiji (taken during his visit to Belgaum) was installed in the Shrine at 10 am by Swami Raghaveshanandaji. The shrine room was painted anew and a glass door fitted to enable devotees to view the shrine from the prayer hall.
Arghyas (betel leaves, flowers and sandal paste) was offered at the feet of Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother Sri Sharada Devi and to the new photo of Swami Vivekananda in a simple ritual amidst Vedic Chanting by Swamis and Brahmacharis of the Ashrama. A Satsanga programme was also organized on this occasion for the public that included Bhajans and discourse and Mahamangalarati (waving of lights around the Deity). Cooked food and sweets were distributed to the devotees who attended the programme.
On this occasion certificates were distributed to the first batch of students of the English speaking course conducted at the sub-centre.
